On behalf of Olaf Weber, CIBC Chair in Sustainable Finance and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business, Samir Trabelsi, Director of the The Natural Capital Valuation Hub, CPA Ontario Distinguished Scholar, Goodman School of Business at Brock University, Peter van Dijk, Adjunct Professor, Goodman School of Business at Brock University, and in collaboration with the Institute for Sustainable Finance (ISF), you are warmly invited to participate in a half-day Natural Assets Valuation Workshop to share current initiatives, identify areas of alignment, and explore opportunities for collaboration. The workshop is partly funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Canada (SSHRC) grant and supported by KPMG, Canada.
The workshop will take place on April 23, from 1 to 6 pm at the Schulich Miles S. Nadal Management Centre, 222 Bay St, Toronto.
Natural assets, such as forests, wetlands, watersheds, and biodiversity, provide essential ecosystem services that underpin human wellbeing and economic stability. At the same time, there remains a practical gap in how we value natural assets and integrate those values into decision-making across finance, risk management, sustainability reporting, and public policy.
Across Canada, researchers, NGOs, and other stakeholders are undertaking important work on natural asset valuation. However, current efforts remain somewhat fragmented. We believe there is an opportunity to build a stronger collaborative community of practice to accelerate progress, reduce duplication, and improve real-world uptake.
We are excited that The Honourable Nathalie Provost, Secretary of State (Nature), will present the government’s ambitions regarding the enhancement of our natural assets and the importance of increasing private sector participation in conservation efforts.
Workshop objectives are
· Share current Canadian research and initiatives related to natural asset valuation
· Connect research, policy, and practice communities
· Identify near-term collaboration opportunities (e.g., shared projects, data, methods, pilots)
· Clarify next steps for an ongoing community of practice
